Hydrocodone is a semisynthetic opioid derived from codeine, one of the opioid alkaloids found in the
opium poppy class of medications called opiate (narcotic) analgesics. Hydrocodone for sale is used to
relieve moderate to severe pain. Other Hydrocodone combination products are used to relieve cough,
Hydrocodone is in a class of medications called antitussives.
Oxycodone and hydrocodone are pain medications. They both can treat short-term pain which is as a
result of an injury or surgery. They are also used to treat chronic pain. In they are also use to treat other
conditions, such as chronic cough, pain from cancer, and arthritis. Hence these drugs can be taken
Many people are afraid of overdose in hydrocodone. Hydrocodone is a compound found in painkillers
like Vicodin, Norco, and Lorcet. It is derived from the same opium poppy as heroin and morphine, and
like these drugs, hydrocodone can cause an overdose when taken in excess.
Hydrocodone is used orally for relief of moderate to severe pain, but also commonly taken in liquid
form as an antitussive/cough suppressant. Hydrocodone is an opioid, and acts as a selective agonist of
the μ-opioid receptor, the main biological target of the endogenous neuropeptide β-endorphin.
The exact amount needed to cause an overdose depends on several variables, including opiate
tolerance, age and weight, metabolism and time of last dose. Each person is different, but if an
addiction occurs, it becomes difficult to avoid taking dangerous amounts.
However, in a study of emergency department patients with fractures, it was found that an equal amount
of either drug provided the same degree of pain relief, indicating that there is little practical difference
between them when used for that purpose. Some references state that the analgesic action of
hydrocodone begins in 20-30 minutes and lasts about 4-8 hours. The manufacturer's information says
onset of action is about 10-30 minutes and duration is about 4-6 hours. Recommended dosing interval
is 4-6 hours.
Hydrocodone pills - also known colloquially as “hydros”. These Opioids, including hydrocodone, open
up a receptor in the brain after just one use. Once opened, this receptor can never be turned off. This is
where the dangers of tolerance, dependence, and substance use come into play. The concept of
“gateway drugs” is trite, but opioid prescription drugs certainly fit the bill.
Hydrocodone is available in a variety of formulations for oral administration:
Immediate-release hydrocodone with paracetamol (acetaminophen) (Vicodin, Lortab, Lorcet,
Maxidone, Norco, Zydone)
Immediate-release hydrocodone with ibuprofen (Vicoprofen, Ibudone, Reprexain)
Immediate-release hydrocodone with aspirin (Alor 5/500, Azdone, Damason-P, Lortab ASA, Panasal
Controlled-release hydrocodone (Hysingla ER, Zohydro ER).
Patients consuming alcohol, other opioids, anticholinergic antihistamines, anti-psychotics, anti-anxiety
agents, or other central nervous system (CNS) depressants together with hydrocodone may exhibit an
additive CNS depression. Hydrocodone may interact with serotonergic medications.
