OxyCodone or Oxycotin is a medication use to relieve moderate to severe pain. Oxycodone belongs to a
class of drugs known as opioid (narcotic) analgesics. It works in the brain to change how your body feels and
responds to pain. The extended-release form of this medication is for around-the-clock treatment of pain. Do
not drink alcohol while you are taking oxycodone.
The active ingredient in OxyContin is oxycodone, an opioid, a close relative of morphine, heroin, codeine,
fentanyl, and methadone. OxyContin has been much abused. It is highly addicting. Those who abuse "Oxy"
usually crush the pills -- to disable their time-release mechanism -- and then snort or inject them for a
powerful and immediate opiate high.
What is the dosage for oxycodone?
The 60 and 80 tablets or single doses greater than 40 mg should only be used by patients who have been
using opioids and have become tolerant to opioid therapy. Administration of large doses to opioid-naïve
patients may lead to profound depression of breathing.
The usual adult dose of the oral concentrate (20 mg/ml) is 5 mg every 6 hours.
Before taking oxycodone, we need to know if you are allergic to it; or to other opioid pain relievers (such as
oxymorphone); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can
cause allergic reactions or other problems.
